Expert Column By Dentistry For Diabetics Founder Dr. Charles Martin Premieres On dLife.Com

Addresses Links Between Gum Disease & Diabetes, Combined Effects On Other Health Issues

A new expert column premiered by Web diabetes portal dLife.com details the hidden links between gum disease, diabetes and other potentially catastrophic health threats. Authored by Dentistry For Diabetics founder Dr. Charles Martin, the column outlines scientifically validated connections between the diseases. It also focuses on ways that people who have diabetes can prevent oral health problems from affecting their metabolic management. Martin announced the new column today.

“The links between these two diseases are only beginning to be reported outside of medical journals, and we have a tremendous amount of work to do to inform people who have diabetes of exactly how big a role gum disease can play in their diabetes and in their overall health,” Martin said. “My first column points out that by themselves, gum disease and diabetes are both significant health risks. Combined, they can twist each other into a tight downward spiral of cascading health effects. If you have diabetes, the more you know about these connections the more able you are to prevent the interactions between oral health problems and diabetes.”

The stakes have never been higher in terms of the nation’s health, Martin said. The diabetes epidemic in the U.S. has grown to 24 million Americans and an estimated 57 million more are at risk. “It’s a national health crisis that demands we do everything in our power to help people who have diabetes learn as much as possible about how to best manage it, and to inform people who have prediabetes understand how they can help prevent developing diabetes. Good oral health care can play a crucial role for both groups,” Martin said.

As one of the Web’s premier diabetes resources, dLife® and its media properties provide extensive reach into the community of people who have diabetes. “In conjunction with dLife, we look forward to a long and productive association in jointly helping people who have diabetes and oral health problems begin to take more control of their own health destiny,” Martin said.
