More About This Case Mackinac Straits Hospital and Health Center, a critical care hospital that is the lifeline for many residents in the Eastern U.P. as well as Mackinac and Bois Blanc islands, lost its operating millage in a November election. Just 310 votes shy.

It wasn't only the loss of the money that could have been so devastating. It was also the fact that much of the hospital's care would no longer be available locally. It meant a 50-mile drive each way to get medical treatment. It also meant the end of plans for a new $30 million hospital to replace the obsolete infrastructure in the current facility. Fortunately the hospital's consultant, The Haveman Group, called Due North. The millage was back on the ballot for May, and it had to pass. We worked hand-in-hand with the hospital's staff and board to make sure the entire community knew what was at stake. Fact sheets, FAQs and letters to editors flew all over the Eastern U.P. Collaborating with Nate Pegman Design, we crafted a large card direct mail campaign, print ads and inserts. With VogelSound, we produced a testimonial :60 that aired on the top two radio stations for the last two weeks. With a clear understanding of what was at stake and full awareness of the hospital's importance, the community responded. The hospital got 80 percent of the vote. They even won in key areas that had always voted against the millage in the past. And they got nearly $900,000 a year. Now they're hard at work on the new hospital project.
